Traction Therapy for Back Pain Relief

[caption id="attachment_416" align="alignleft" width="225" caption="Home Traction Therapy in Action"]Home traction Therapy[/caption] Inversion therapy can be a great natural way to alleviate back pain. Natural methods such as back traction carry less risk, compared to invasive methods (spinal surgery), or painkillers. Some people who suffer from back pain turn to prescription medications, which have dangerous short-term side effects and risk of dependence. Opiate-based painkillers such as Hydrocodone, Hydromorphone, and Oxycodone can be effective for short-term pain relief. The problem with using painkillers to treat symptoms is that over time they will lose their effectiveness as your body begins to develop a tolerance. Back pain can be caused by traumatic events such as car accidents, falls, and work related injuries. Car accidents can cause vertebrae fractures, spinal compression, and alignment issues. Other people suffer from back pain due to obesity, poor posture, or abnormal spine curvatures (scoliosis). There are many different treatment options for people who suffer from back pain, which can include: • Medication (over the counter and prescription painkillers or anti-inflammatory drugs) • Chiropractic (manual spinal manipulation) • Acupuncture • Physical therapy (back strengthening & flexibility exercises, traction therapy) • Back surgery (invasive surgery is usually the last resort) During physical therapy visits one of the methods for alleviating pain involves traction therapy. A specialized machine is used to stretch your spine, which relieves pressure from natural compression. Visiting a physical therapist can be extremely beneficial. However, it can be quite expensive for repeated visits. Your insurance company will charge you a copay amount between $20-40 per visit. If traction therapy is helpful for reducing your back pain, you may want to consider purchasing your own back traction device. These generally fall into one of two categories: • Back stretchers • Inversion tables If you use your back stretcher or inversion table on a daily basis, you can save a lot of money compared to the cost of medical copays. Having your own traction therapy equipment allows you to decompress your spine on a daily basis, without having to attend physical therapy. Home traction devices perform the same function of stretching your back as the traction machines in your PT office. The biggest difference is that your home machine relies on gravity, instead of a motor driven unit. From the moment you wake up until the end of the day, your body will lose approximately half an inch in height because of gravity. NASA physicians have stated that astronauts returning from outer space missions are usually taller because of the time spent in a weightless environment. Back decompression therapy allows your body to naturally recover and heal itself. When your back is stretched out, spinal fluid will naturally flow into the gap between your vertebrae. Normal gravitational forces compress your spine on a daily basis. When your spine is compressed, this can cause pain because of nerve compression. In addition to physical pain, spinal compression also creates other issues. Natural spinal compression reduces blood flow circulation, and diminishes the efficiency of your lymph node system. Your lymphatic system is responsible for clearing out your body’s natural waste, created by metabolic cell processes. When you are shopping for inversion tables, make sure that you purchase a unit which will hold up to the weight of your body. Low-end inversion tables may cost less, however they can be poorly constructed. The reason that they cost less money is because of the fact that they are made using lower grade materials. Premium inversion tables cost more because of the engineering, and choice of materials. High end inversion tables use a heavier gauge metal, and have higher quality welds. These models are much safer, and will last longer during normal use. [wp_eStore_fancy2 id=1] [wp_eStore_category_fancy id=2]
